Founded in 1968 by clinical psychologist Edwin S. Shneidman, PhD, the American Association of Suicidology (AAS) was established to advance suicide research, education, and prevention nationwide. As a hub connecting crisis centers, researchers, and practitioners, AAS launched crisis center accreditation in 1976 and individual crisis worker certification in 1989, helping standardize professional training in suicide prevention. Today, AAS supports over 850 organizations, 120 accredited crisis centers, and thousands of professional members, including clinicians, educators, researchers, and suicide loss survivors. It provides public education, publishes the peer-reviewed Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior journal, hosts the largest annual suicidology conference, and sets national standards for crisis services. Through training, professional development, and collaborative networks, AAS strengthens suicide prevention efforts, expands access to survivor support, and promotes education and research across communities.
